Aproveito para agradecer o facto de não deixar passar em claro a autoria da do Hino do Movimento das forças Armadas. A canção quando foi escrita por Henry Russel (inglês de nascimento), tinha como objectivo a participação num espectáculo da Broadway, em Nova Iorque (cerca de 1840). Só mais tarde é que foi transformada no hino militar do Corps of Royal Marines (1882)
É igualmente o hino da United States Merchant Marine Academy. Esta instituição forma não só militares, mas sobretudo civis para o serviço na marinha mercante.
Com diversas letras foi muito popular em Inglaterra e nos Estados Unidos e está ligada ao trabalho portuário nos dois lados do atlântico, sobretudo nos estaleiros de construção naval, antes de ser tornada em marcha militar.
O poema original foi escrito pelo norte-americano Epps Sargent.
